United Way of Eastern Maine provides emergency heating assistance through a statewide partnership of Maine’s United Ways and Community Action Agencies. Donations are distributed through a formula based on federal Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) percentages and population, and are used to assist individuals directly, or designated to local organizations that provide emergency fuel assistance, including faith-based programs and nonprofit agencies.
United Way supported 211 Maine sees an increase in total call volume in winter months due to heating-related requests. Aside from questions related to COVID-19, heating or electric payment assistance were the most common request for help every month of 2021. Every year, thousands of Mainers are faced with choosing between heating their homes and basic needs like food and medicine.
Each year, UWEM along with the United Ways of Maine partners with NEWS CENTER Maine for the Project Heat Telethon.
