Shirar Patterson is the President & CEO at United Way of Eastern Maine (UWEM). She is the first female to hold the top job at United Way of Eastern Maine. She has an extensive background of corporate, nonprofit and community involvement. On top of her work with United Way of Eastern Maine both as a volunteer, board and staff member, she has a long history of bringing people and communities together. She has held positions business and economic development officer/downtown coordinator for the City of Bangor, community coordinator at the University of Maine and program director at the Bangor Region Chamber of Commerce.
A committed community advocate, Patterson has served in leadership roles for numerous organizations in Maine throughout her career. She currently serves on the Maine Association of Nonprofits Board of Directors and Acadia Hospital’s Board of Trustees. She has also served on the board of directors for the Bangor Humane Society, University of Maine Alumni Association, United Way of Eastern Maine and the Greater Bangor Convention and Visitors Bureau.
Patterson is a graduate of the University of Maine earning a Bachelor’s degree in Public Management and a Master’s degree in Public Administration. She was a member of the Bangor Region Leadership Institute’s (BRLI) Class of 2006 and awarded The BRLI G. Clifton Eames Leadership Award in 2018. In 2016 she was one of 12 national United Way Leaders selected for United Way Worldwide’s Advanced Leadership Program. In 2019 she was a proud participant in Maine Community Foundation’s Leadership Learning Exchange for Equity. Without a doubt, her most rewarding role is that of wife to Ryan and mother to Wade and Cale.
