United Way of Eastern Maine follows the accounting standards set by United Way Worldwide, meets FASB guidelines, and is audited by an independent accounting firm each year. As well, an independent board of local professionals that includes Certified Public Accountants and several local business leaders with financial expertise oversee and review the United Way of Eastern Maine fiscal control policies and practices, and interim financial statements throughout the year.
No one person administers the work of United Way of Eastern Maine. United Way of Eastern Maine is run by local volunteers who review our budget, IRS Form 990 and the annual audit. The UWEM Board of Directors establishes policy and sets the strategic direction that United Way staff implement and follow. Volunteers oversee the allocation of funds to agencies and program partners. Every other year more than 80 trained United Way of Eastern Maine community volunteers decide where the funding can have the greatest amount of impact in our community.
