The Katherine K. Dolley Memorial Fund
Established at United Way of Eastern Maine
It is no surprise to those who knew Katherine Dolley that she left a bequest for the United Way of Eastern Maine in her will. Katherine believed in community trusteeship-- the idea of taking responsibility for the well being of a community. As such, she was committed to many communities—the town of Bangor where she lived, the town of Brewer where she worked, the United Way family and the Maine Association of Broadcasters.
The Katherine K. Dolley Memorial Fund was established as a result of her generous bequest and the memorial gifts of her friends and family. The fund is part of the United Way endowment and will be used to support the people of Eastern Maine and continue Katherine's commitment to the community.
"Katherine's commitment to our United Way was truly extraordinary, and she would be so pleased to know that gifts in her memory will be used to further the mission and help people in need here in Eastern Maine," said Jeff Wahlstrom, President of the United Way of Eastern Maine.
Katherine was a dedicated volunteer to the organization holding numerous positions through the years--strategic plan committee co-chair, nominating committee, executive director search committee co-chair and information and referral committee chair as well as a member of the board of directors and executive committee.
She received the 1991 Communications Award "for her continuing efforts to increase awareness of United Way and the 1994 President's Award "for outstanding service to United Way and the community."
Katherine encouraged United Way to evolve to meet the changing times and needs of the community. Through her guidance, United Way changed its name, expanded to include five counties in Eastern Maine and started community building initiatives.
Her dedication to her profession and to community involvement garnered her widespread acknowledgement. As Founding GeneralPartner and General Manager of Radio Station WQCB-FM, Katherine's leadership role in the station's growth gained her national recognition. She received the Country Music Association's coveted "General Manager of the Station of the Year/Small Market in 1992 and again in 1994.
In 1995, she received the Broadcaster of the Year award from the Maine Broadcasters Associations. As part of her acceptance speech, Katherine said," We each have many blessings: health, family, home, job. I have a very strong belief, that we need to give back some measure of what we have been given."
Those comments are —vintage Katherine,' says husband Mike Dolley. "It's what she believed and how she lived her life. The Katherine K. Dolley Memorial Fund is a wonderful tribute to a very special and caring woman. Although she never sought personal honors, her family and I know that Katherine would be pleased that her work for United Way of Eastern Maine will continue."
With the creation of the Katherine K. Dolley Memorial Fund, Katherine will be giving back for many years to come. What a fitting tribute to a woman who believed in giving to her community!
