What must my child do to qualify for the Camp Bangor Scholarship Program?

First, children must currently be in the  4th, 5th, or 6th grade and be enrolled in a Bangor Public School.  Second, each child must meet Good Citizenship Guidelines as defined by their school.  Finally, children must complete some form of volunteer work.  This can include volunteering with a church or scouting group, donating new children’s dental hygiene items or participating in the Bangor Citywide Clean-Up in May organized by the United Way. What are the steps to the Camp Bangor Scholarship Program?

Obtain an application from your child’s Bangor Public School (forms will be handed out during the month of February).  Complete the application and return it to your child’s school for approval as soon as possible (check the application for the DEADLINE DATE).  Choose your summer camps from the Camp Bangor Directory 2009 list.  Once you receive your Camp Selection Form and Participation Cards in the mail, sign up directly with the camps.  Complete the Selection Form and return it to United Way as soon as possible or by May 15, 2009

Where can I get an application for the Camp Bangor Scholarship Program?
Applications are distributed through your child's Bangor public school to all 4-6 grade students. Additonal copies can be obtained through your school principal's office.

How much is the scholarship?
Camp Bangor provides $500 for fourth through sixth graders enrolled in the Bangor public school system. Any camp fees over the limit are the responsibility of the child's family. The scholarship is for the summer of 2009 only. If not used in full, it can not be rolled over for another year nor can it be used by another child.

How do I know if my child is accepted into the Camp Bangor Scholarship Program?
If your child's principal has signed the Camp Bangor Application, then he/she is accepted into the program. Within three to five weeks after Camp Bangor receives the application, you will receive a mailing to your home asking you to complete and then return the Camp Selection Form to United Way of Eastern Maine. Forms need to be returned as soon as possible so we can process them in a timely fashion.

What camps qualify for the Camp Bangor Scholarship Program?
Only camps listed in the Camp Bangor Directory available in March 2009 are eligible to participate during the 2009 summer. Qualifying camps are located in the state of Maine, provide an on-site First Aid/CPR certified staff member and carry the appropriate liability insurance.

When should I register my child for summer camp?
Register with camps as soon as your child receives the Camp Selection Form and Participation Cards packet through the mail. Most residential camps require registration in late winter or early spring. Day camp programs start registration in early spring. Regardless, it is best to sign up for camp as soon as possible to ensure a place in your preferred program. REMEMBER TO RETURN THE CAMP BANGOR APPLICATION TO YOUR CHILD'S SCHOOL QUICKLY TO ENSURE A TIMELY DELIVERY OF THE CAMP SELECTION PACKET.

What if a camp requires a deposit?
Although many camps waive the deposit for Camp Bangor youth (i.e. include it in the total for payment by Camp Bangor in the summer), some camps still require a deposit in order to secure a child's place. The camp should reimburse your deposit once your child has finished camp and Camp Bangor has paid the bill. It is your responsibility to check with the camp about deposits. Camp Bangor does not reimburse parents for deposits made to camps.

How can I find out about camps in Maine?
The Camp Bangor Directory should be a primary resource.  An online directory, including links to camps can be found at the United Way website www.unitedwayem.org. Please remember that United Way does not own, operate, manage, certify, endorse, license, evaluate, monitor, or select the camp that you and your child may choose to attend.  It is your responsibility to closely examine any camp that your child may potentially attend.  The Maine Youth Camping Association (MYCA) has a catalog and web-site as well. They can be reached at 1-800-536-7712 or online at www.mainecamps.org.
